Site Issues
CategoryNew Commenting Platform
A new commenting platform, implemented as of this morning, is one of the more noticeable results of recent work on the site. Check it out!

Discussion About Discussions Here
Since there appears to be interest in discussing the recent experiments here regarding the comments (see some of the comments on the “Illusion and Agreement in the Debate over Intolerance” post), I thought I’d open up a separate space for that. (more…)

2019: A Look Back
What news and issues concerning the philosophy profession received the most attention in 2019? Among last year’s top stories were a philosopher’s punishment for sexual harassment, the rallying of academics worldwide to defend the study of philosophy in a country in which it was under attack, philosophers commenting on a provocative physics experiment, the philosophy..

Daily Nous Turns Five
Daily Nous began with a brief welcome message five years ago, today, around this time. Some of you may be thinking: “five years already? No way!” Others may be thinking, “only five years? I thought it has been around forever.” Still others might be thinking, “you are not going to guess what I’m thinking.” (more…)

A Note On Making Discussions Here Better
We often have vigorous and contentious discussions in the comments here at Daily Nous, and this past week—with its focus on philosophizing about transgender issues—was no exception (see here and here).
Administrative Note
Dear readers, posting at Daily Nous will be on the rather light side for the remainder of the week. (more…)
Message from the Editor regarding “A Tale of Two Conferences”
Running a news and discussion site for professional philosophers involves, among other things, making judgments about what is and what is not newsworthy.
That a story is newsworthy is not to say that a post about it will appear at Daily Nous, for there may be countervailing considerations that provide reasons not to post about it, or there might be circumstances ..
Site Layout Issues
Yesterday morning, some changes were made to the layout here at Daily Nous (most visibly, some of the advertising slots were moved around). Some people have reported that the site now looks “different” or “avant garde” or “completely screwed up.” Here’s how it should look (on a normal-sized laptop):
This Week at Daily Nous
This week Daily Nous will be publishing a number of guest posts. I’m at a conference and will have considerably less time to attend to the site and to philosophy news. Feel free to keep me informed about what’s going on, but please note that posts and replies to emails will be slower to appear. (more…)

Daily Nous turns 2 today!
Time flies. I was looking through the old scrapbook the other day and it is amazing how much DN has changed since those first few months…
Daily Nous continues to grow. Over the past year it was visited nearly three and a half million times, and there are bunch of new features at the site, as I detailed in the end-of-2015 post.

Comments Changeover This Weekend
As the new commenting system (described here) is put into place this weekend, piece by piece, the commenting on Daily Nous may be a bit buggy. This may mean some comments getting lost, some going right through on the new system without my moderation, and some being queued for moderation as on the old system. Please bear with us.
The ‘reply’ function and comment ‘..
Some Upcoming Changes to Daily Nous

Advertising On Daily Nous
Daily Nous is supported by caffeine and advertising revenue, so please buy me a coffee next time you see me, and also check out our advertisers. By “check out” I mean click on them and see what they’re about. They’re right over there → (on a standard screen), or down there ↓ (on a phone).
If you’re interested in advertising on Daily Nous, send me an email.

From The Censor
One of the benefits of thought experiments and hypothetical examples is that, since the people with which they’re populated aren’t real, you can relentlessly discuss your way through the logical space without having to worry about how they’ll take what you’re saying about them. Your conversation might justifiably sound a bit different, I’d think, if your interlocuto..
A Reminder About Comments
Since Daily Nous has been getting a bit more traffic over the past few days I’d like to draw people’s attention to the comments policy. Check it out, please. In general, the idea is to try to keep the comments section worth reading, even for people who haven’t participated in it. For some further thoughts from me about moderating comments here, see this. Thank you f..
