New Commenting Platform
A new commenting platform, implemented as of this morning, is one of the more noticeable results of recent work on the site. Check it out!
It gives readers some new tools for formatting their comments, embedding links, quoting text, ordering the comments, and easily linking to or sharing comments. It also restores commenters’ ability to reply under others’ comments, a functionality which mysteriously vanished from the site a few months back.
Additionally, the new platform adds a long-requested feature: the ability to edit your comments. Once your comment is posted, a little gear-wheel icon should be visible at the bottom of it. Click on that and then the edit button appears and you can make changes to your comment. Note, though, that about 15 minutes after your comment is posted, you lose the ability to edit it. You also cannot edit comments that have been replied to. [Update, 2/22/21: I’ve turned on the comment bubble, which floats along the lower left side of the posts. Click it to comment and/or be taken to the comments.]
While we’re talking about comments, I’d encourage those who haven’t yet done so to acquaint themselves with the comments policy.
Much of the recent maintenance went to replacing out-of-date software that interfered with the ability to keep various parts of the site working smoothly and reduce site downtime. We’re still addressing some functionality issues—for example, restoring email subscriptions to posts—but we’re now in a better position to do so.
Thanks for your patience these past few months!
UPDATE (2/24/21): Someone asked how to customize the icon that appears near their name when they comment. That icon is known as a “Gravatar” and to customize it you first need to have a WordPress account (which is free). You can create a WordPress account or login into your existing one and customize your Gravatar here.
Great News!Report
I noticed that links under ‘Recent Comments’ no longer link to specific comments but only to the post. I wonder if this is intentional?
Edit: Actually, there’s an additional problem. The user link in ‘[User] on [Post]’ under ‘Recent Comments’ links to the whatever page you’re currently on, which seems like a bug.Report
Thanks. I’ll look into that.Report
I admit that the fact that clicking on a post doesn’t automatically take me to that post, like the old system did, makes keeping up on threads much much harder. Whether that’s an intentional nudge or a bug, it’s definitely keeping me from posting as much because it’s harder to see new posts, especially when they’re responses (or responses to responses).Report
There’s a fair amount on the current to do list. We’ll get to that eventually. For now, note that comments on posts that have appeared since you last visited the page should be highlighted in yellow.Report
That’s useful Justin! Thank you.Report
It might be a problem on my end, but this feature doesn’t work for me unless I have a DN page continuously open. I really like the new look, but it does mean that I don’t see replies for posts that have had many comments. But I am sure this will sort itself out with time! Thanks again for all your work on this blog.Report
Can’t decide if my response should be “See, I would never have noticed that, as I always have several DN pages continuously open” or “This is all part of my plan for you all to be on DN all the time.”
In any event. Thanks for letting me know.Report
I love this plugin 🙂
Thanks for the update.Report
I’ve noticed that, under past posts, a profile picture is now sometimes attached to comments that were posted anonymously.Report
