World Philosophy Day Is this Thursday
World Philosophy Day is the third Thursday of November. That’s this Thursday. Is your department doing anything to mark the day? Are you?

World Philosophy Day, created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), celebrates “the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual.”
UNESCO’s own programming for the day, which will be streamed online, is focused on the theme, “Philosophy: bridging social gaps”. You can learn more about it here.
I don’t think this is what UNESCO had in mind, but bridging the social gap between those who think of philosophy as valuable and those who don’t might be of particular importance nowadays.
If you or your department are planning on celebrating World Philosophy Day, let us know what you have planned.
The philosophy program at the University of Guam is hosting its second annual block party! The event provides undergraduates the opportunity to meet philosophy majors and minors and to learn about the program. There’s free food, hourly drawings for gift certificates to local stores, and philosophy-themed table games, like Zendo and Trial by Trolley.
I moderated an “Ask Us Anything” panel with my fellow philosophers of Utah State University. The local public Logan Library hosted, co-sponsored, and helped advertise the event, which led to an interview on Utah Public Radio. The event attracted a crowd of 40 and was very well-received. Several questions revolved around the value of philosophy in relation to career preparation and the work of other disciplines, so we were especially pleased to help bridge that specific social gap between those who think of philosophy as valuable and those who don’t.
