How to Justify an AI Ban in Your Classroom (Guest Post)
“I don’t want to be a cop in the classroom. So, it’s… important for students to come to the same conclusion themselves and understand the rationale for this [AI] policy.”
Recently, Patrick Lin, a philosophy professor at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, wrote a long essay for his students on the importance of explaining to why artificial intelligence (AI) is prohibited in his courses. He also shared it on his new Substack site with the thought that it could be of use to other instructors in justifying an AI ban to their own students, “to help get their buy-in from the very start.”
In this guest post, Professor Lin offers a meta-discussion around the article, including questions about it that he’s been asked. It’s a timely follow-up to a Daily Nous conversation last month about how to get students to do their coursework without the help of AI. His full article can be found here.

How to Justify an AI Ban in Your Classroom

The new academic term is soon upon us, if not here already for some, and philosophers are still scrambling to sort out their classroom policies in light of rampant AI cheating. Do they fight the AI trend, or do they lean into it —that is, resistance or appeasement (or even assimilation)?
Either way could be ok, but both paths have risks and costs. If you have the time to retool your course to allow for AI use, then great, but are those new assignments pedagogically sound, considering most of us aren’t instructional technology & design experts? Or if you just ban AI, how effective would that even be, and how do you get students to go along with the plan?
I chose the resistance path—to ban AI—as the path of least resistance, ironically. This seems appropriate, considering most of us are overworked and underpaid teachers who didn’t create this AI-cheating epidemic, and we’re typically not given resources by our schools to do much else about it.
But a big worry with this path is that it can change the teacher-student relationship for the worse. Many students will think a blanket ban is too dogmatic or strict, even harmful to their future, if it’ll be important to know how to use AI in the job market when they graduate. This can lead them to be resentful and disregard your ban out of spite, affecting their morale and how much they’ll get from your course.
My approach is two-pronged. Beside deterrence measures in the form of penalties, I also want to try gentle persuasion to get students on board with the AI policy. Once they understand the policy, the hope is that they’ll want to comply with it on their own, even without penalties. This isn’t just for the good of my own classroom; it would be helpful to a student’s entire academic career—and future—if they understand the value of putting in the work themselves and not using AI, especially when a course isn’t designed to handle AI.
I won’t attempt to summarize the article here, not least of all because it ended up being more than 12,000 words as a result of me trying to round up all the major concerns around AI use by students. (If I missed any big ones, feel free to let me know.) But in what follows I’ll point out a few issues in there that I haven’t seen discussed much elsewhere, but which could resonate with students.
In section 3 on “future risks”, I take seriously the popular assumption by AI enthusiasts and promoters that AI will do most or all of our jobs in the future, and we’ll just need to know how to use or “wrangle” AI. That seems to be a major belief behind the rationalization of AI cheating in school. If we take that premise seriously, what follows? I suggest that the premise leads to something like a reductio ad absurdum—it’s self-defeating:
“Maybe that prediction is right, but it can’t possibly mean that you will only need to know how to use AI and little else. If that were the case, then companies can hire anyone, assuming they want to hire humans at all —and there’s no reason they would need to hire you specifically. AI wranglers are (or will be) a dime a dozen and don’t require any expertise or educational background. With such a huge oversupply of interchangeable AI wranglers, the pay scale would be miserable.”
Relatedly, there’s a growing chorus of calls for teachers to integrate AI into their classes because knowing how to use AI will be vital in the future, or so the prediction goes. But:
“Even if it’s important to learn how to use AI in this brave new world, it’s not clear that the typical university course is the place to do it, much less a philosophy course … Think about the other technologies that modern workers need to know, such as office applications (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation slides, etc.). Can you name a university course that has an objective of learning how to use those technologies? Unless the course itself is an introduction to computers or office technologies, the learning objectives would usually be related to the course’s subject itself, philosophy in our case, and not on general life-skills.”
There’s more to all this, but what I left unsaid (because it isn’t very relevant to students) is: if schools think AI literacy is so vital for their students’ future, then schools should create and require classes dedicated to teaching those skills, similar to a typing course. Otherwise, either they don’t believe AI is such a high priority or, worse, they believe it is but have no plan, other than punt the problem to shell-shocked teachers to deal with.
I’m not against AI in principle and was optimistic early on that we could find a clever way to make philosophy classes AI-friendly. Some courses may lend themselves to using AI, such as logic classes, but most philosophy classes appear resistant to that, at least without a major overhaul. Many attempts to integrate AI into a course seem gimmicky or gratuitous, which suggests they’re of questionable pedagogical value compared to time-tested assignments.
For instance, a popular idea is to get AI to do some philosophy, and then the student tries to play “gotcha” with it and identify its errors. Sure, this may have some value, but it’s hardly a substitution for writing a whole critical essay—not even close. Worse, the student can still game those assignments or cheat with AI, e.g., get a second AI to identify the first AI’s errors.
I do hope that AI and academia can co-exist peacefully, but it’s hard to see how right now. Other things would also need to be solved if we care about ethical or responsible AI use, such as AI’s massive energy costs, hallucinations, and many other things discussed in my article. So, in the absence of a general solution and in the meantime, a blanket ban on AI seems justifiable, if an instructor wants to adopt the policy. It’s also ok if some instructors want to experiment with AI and their students—that’s on them.
More nuanced approaches to AI use in the classroom are possible, e.g., “students may use AI for x but not for y”. But I didn’t choose those paths because I wanted to avoid sending mixed messages and opening the door for abuse; a simple and clear policy seems better. Anyway, the blanket ban is just for the individual classroom; I’m not creating national policy here. If any student thinks AI is so important to their future that they should be learning how to use it, well, they can already do that for free at home or in other classes. No one is stopping them, and it ain’t rocket science, anyway.
Since the aim of my article is gentle persuasion, I wanted to start by giving credit where credit is due and acknowledge upfront that I’m not disputing AI’s utility. I’m happy to grant AI can be useful for students, even if I think the benefits are overblown, because there’s still a huge list of countervailing reasons against them using it. So many other articles on the subject come off as hostile, hyperbolic, alarmist, preachy, judgmental, scornful, and so on; even if such a tone is justified, it might not be helpful with persuasion and voluntary uptake.
And voluntary uptake may be critical in making the AI ban self-enforcing, as a best-case scenario. Or at least it’s worth a shot—desperate times call for desperate measures. For students who aren’t convinced, I’ve at least given a detailed defense, instead of imposing a dramatic policy without much explanation. The next-best outcome for student morale and course effectiveness is if they understand and go along with the policy, even if they’re unconvinced.
One obvious problem with my article is that it’s so long—I wish I had time to cut it in half, and maybe I’ll try later. (Yes, I gave the task to an AI as an experiment, and it failed terribly, at least to this author’s standards.) So, how do you get your students to read this? I’ll leave that for you to figure out, just as you’re already doing with the other articles, books, etc. in your own courses. For me, a spot-check quiz, an essay assignment around the article, and a running conversation (on Slack) over the length of the online course are part of the motivation, but there can also be other ways.
If you find the article useful, feel free to use it in your courses however you like, even as a target article for students to pick apart or as the core of some AI assignment (but I’ll be sad if you do). Or if you think AI bans are silly, that’s fine, too—you do you. Whichever path you choose, good luck to all of us in the new academic year!
I agree we need to justify an AI ban in classrooms, but I suggest a complete ban. Classrooms are meant to be crucibles of human thought—places where students wrestle with ideas, stumble, recover, and grow, etc. The rise of AI in education threatens to hollow out this process by basically replacing the struggle of learning with a passive outsourcing of thought. A complete ban on AI in the classroom is not a knee-jerk rejection of technology as it’s often characterized —it’s a defense of the irreplaceable cognitive and moral development that comes from doing the hard work ourselves, in philosophy and other disciplines.
Fully agreed. As an aside, I hate that I doubletake now whenever I see phrases of the form “An X isn’t a Y–it’s a Z,” as in your last sentence. This is a perfectly fine expression that AI (particularly ChatGPT, which uses it frequently) has ruined for me. Oh well.
Yeah, that was a style of expression that really felt like a dead giveaway to how students used AI in writing scripts for their presentations last term for me.
It might even be worse with presentations, hearing them speak this way out loud!
The way I’m thinking about it right now, a complete ban on AI in the classroom is like a complete ban on machines in the gym. It totally makes sense for some gyms to be free weights only. But it also makes sense for some gyms to have a variety of machines that enable you to do targeted exercises of particular muscles that are hard to focus on with free weights. But you have to be careful with those machines to make sure they are usefully designed and don’t encourage bad form.
And even in a gym where the clients only use free weights, the trainer might very reasonably use a machine to help them re-rack all the weights quickly in ways that benefit all their clients.
Regardless, the client needs to be doing hard work if they want to get any benefit.
As a gym rat, I have to say that the number of patrons using machines incorrectly is… High. Because they don’t know anything about form, or targeting, or muscle groups in the first place.
I would have said that a complete ban on AI in the classroom is like a ban on *forklifts* in the gym.
I think we can consider the (very real) problem of how to handle AI in classrooms in the next few years without needing to form long-term philosophical views about its appropriateness or otherwise. Fundamentally what makes this problem hard is that right now the technology is changing extremely rapidly and we have rather little idea of how it will be integrated into academic and other workflows. (Compare: calculators, word processors, and software like Mathematica were also pretty revolutionary, but they are mature products now, we all know how they are used, and it isn’t too hard to work out the consequences for classroom teaching.)
One of two things will happen with AI: either it will plateau, in which case we will settle down within a few years to a reasonably clear understanding of how it is to be used and what this means for the classroom; or it will continue to develop exponentially, in which case the world will change radically and questions of how to handle undergrad classes will look quaint, always assuming we survive to ask them.
I understand the concerns about cheating and gaming, and the difficulties of speedily redesigning courses to incorporate AI directly. However, I do have an uncomfortable feeling that we may be on the wrong side of history here. And I think that would be a shame because philosophy is well-placed to contribute to the important questions around use of AI in society, and what is left for, or how AI can enhance, human capability. At the very least I would hope that, if banning generally, we could nonetheless create some space occasionally – a sandbox – for class use of AI, not so much for spotting errors, but perhaps constructively steering the AI deep into issues, and discussing the pros and cons, ethics, etc. (Some concrete suggestions have been put forward in other discussion threads.)
Talking *about* AI and LLMs in a philosophy classroom is a very different thing than letting or requiring students to *use* AI or LLMs in their assignments. Most of my classes (ethics and M&E) will spend some time discussing AI, since it’s a fascinating and currently-relevant topic that acts as a nexus for lots of interesting philosophical issues. But I also implement a ban on using AI to write assignments. I’m hoping Dr. Lin’s article will be just the bridge between these things that I’ve been looking for in my Intro Ethics class!
I do not think this is an either/or question. It is possible for philosophy to study AI on a deep level while still banning its use in most classrooms. The point of most philosophy classes is to learn philosophy in a way that enhances our ability to reason. In situations where AI gets in the way of that it should be banned. Yes, their probably is a place for courses where students learn how to optimize the use of AI or how to incorporate it into their lives but I would argue that most philosophy classes are not that place. Most philosophy courses should be focused on the best ways to train our human minds to be better and in a lot of cases that should not be through the use of AI. I look at it very similarly to the use of calculators in math class. Certain types of math classes allow calculators but many either restrict the type you can use or ban them completely because they are trying to teach students how to do math not how to use a calculator to do math.
Are there really classes that ban calculators? Maybe the US is different, but as a UK student I could use a calculator in any college class, or indeed high-school class.
A closer analogy would be software like Matlab or Mathematica. These are extremely widely used in physics and engineering, but it’s still important for students to learn the core ideas of (e.g.) solving differential equations without just using those tools.
It was quite a long time ago now, but my university calculus classes didn’t allow us to use calculators in class or on exams. (This encouraged us to try to do the homework w/o them, too, as otherwise the exams would have been pretty hard.) This was well after the development of graphing calculators, though I assume now there are ones that can do even more things. (This was in the early 90s.)
I’d forgotten that graphics calculators were even a thing! Yes, maybe those were restricted.
In graphics calculator society, the singularity is already here.
I can’t speak for every class but I have known Calc (and other entry level math) classes to either ban some or all calculators for exams and other in class activities. These classes would also typically design their questions in such a way that the arithmetic was not absurd to do by hand or in your head. I will admit that my info is a little dated by this point and things could have changed in the last 10 years. I am sure it also varies by institution.
I have also taken entry level chem classes that allowed basic scientific calculators but banned graphing calculators.
It may be that the correct analogue to LLM AIs in intro level philosophy courses is not calculators in university level calculus courses. My feeling is that using AI in an intro level philosophy courses is like using a calculator in an elementary school arithmetic class (or, as said above, using a forklift in the gym.) The foundational analytic skills that we are teaching can only be learned by doing the work of learning.
No freshman-level essay on the allegory of cave, or whatever else we assign, is going to change the scholarly understanding of the text. But that’s not the point. The purpose of the exercise is to develop the mind of the student. Once one has mastery of the basics, it could make sense to use a calculator or an LLM in the interest of greater efficiency. But so long as the output itself isn’t the objective (i.e. when lifting weights, my final cause isn’t the movement of the barbell, it’s getting larger biceps) cutting corners means not achieving the objective.
I’m teaching an intro ethics course (based on ethics bowl set up) and will have the students do an ethics bowl discussion about whether they should be able to use A.I. I’m hoping they will come up with most of these reasons which i’ll give them afterwards (and kinda summarize most of Patrick’s excellent discussion). I will have a complete ban on chatbot usage in all my courses. [not sure if formatting will be a mess below]
Why you should not use chatbots for your assignments?
Intrinsic reasons (for the good of the activity itself)
If you use A.I. or chatbots to write your papers, then…
· You will not learn how to write (college is a gym for the mind—it’d be silly to go to the gym and watch a machine lift the weights for you)
· You will not learn how to act, create, be original (being passive is not living)
· You will not learn how to think or reason morally (and you risk moral ‘deskilling’)
· You will not learn what you actually think about important issues
· I will not learn what you think (I really don’t care what chatbots “think”)
· Your classmates and others will not learn what you think
Extrinsic reasons (for goods outside the activity itself)
If you use A.I. or chatbots to write your papers, then…
· You fail to gain skills that will be useful for many of your future academic classes
· You fail to gain skills that will be useful for your future career (even if that career allows you to use A.I./chatbots, you need to learn how to do the critical and creative thinking and writing that will become increasingly valuable in the age of A.I.)
· You waste your tuition money and time (assuming you are paying for college in part to learn and not just get a diploma)
· You fail to gain skills that will be crucial for our society and the future of democracy
· You risk failing the assignment or course for violating the Academic Dishonesty policy
· even if not, you still risk a very low grade for failing to do the assignment according to the instructions
· You harm your peers, both your teammates and all college students—e.g., by cheating when they do not and by screwing up what grades are supposed to mean
· You harm me (e.g., by wasting my time reading and grading chatbot output); plus, you really will make me sad (I hope that’s not an extrinsic reason for you to decide to cheat!)
· You face the unknown risks of becoming increasingly dependent on, even addicted to, using chatbots
· You contribute to the substantial risks that A.I. poses to privacy, the environment, and potentially the future of humanity

ChatGPT also sucked at producing such a bulleted list. Maybe it could get there eventually with a lot more “wrangling”, but it would likely be easier (or more reliable) to just do it myself and start from scratch…

Why does the burden fall on someone wanting to skip this tech? Is the direction of fit such that whatever Silicon Valley produces we educators/philosophers must incorporate? I never got that memo, so I am unsure why the argumentative backflips are mine to make.
I think the main defense of justification here is a pragmatic one: pronouncements sans any attempt at justification might be ignored, or, even if obeyed, may chafe because they reek of authoritarianism. Some students will grumble less and perhaps obey more if your policy is justified, especially in contexts where it’s not obvious to them what the justification might be. This is certainly one of those contexts, because so many people (including not just students but people who really ought to know better) have drunk deep of the AI Kool Aid.
Another defense is a more principled one, which is that one ought not to teach in an authoritarian manner to the extent this is avoidable, and one way to avoid this is to offer justifications for pronouncements like “no AI use is permitted for this course.”
I find the former defense quite compelling. My love of lording power over others means I’m less compelled by the second, but I know many less dictatorial people for whom the second is also compelling.
I do agree with you that in principle people really ought to sit down and think about whether AI use makes sense in any given context, and they should arrive on their own at the view that at the very least, if the professor for a course they are enrolled in says “no,” then “no” is the right answer in that context. But, not everyone can make it there on their own. So, one must wheel in justifications.
This assignment probably works great for Professor Lin. If I were a student, I would be very impressed if my professor cared so much to write this very thorough and well researched essay. But if I were a student and my professor was anyone else, I think this assignment would come of as insecure, at the least.
What it takes to convince students to meaningfully engage with your class is the same as it has always been: convince them that you respect their time and that the material is genuinely worthy of it. This means only assign readings and assignments worth their time, effectively communicate why those things are worth their time, and demonstrate that you’ve put thought and care into how you teach the material.
A 12,000 word essay (even a 1,000 word essay, for that matter) isn’t going to change students’ behavior because (1) the offenders aren’t gong to read it (why is it worth reading?), and even if they do, (2) it doesn’t convince them that your class is going to be a worthy investment of their time. Assigning this essay might even make problem (2) worse.
Personally, I try not to waste more time than necessary talking with my students about AI use. I communicate the ban, explain the consequences of violating it, tell them I’ve enforced the ban in the past, and ask what questions they have. I haven’t had any students confused about the rationale for the ban.
I agree with some of this. Philosophers like to talk about things at great length (12,000 words, even), and that’s all good and well in philosophy circles, but backing up an AI policy at that length sends messages that might not be good to send. That it’s really hard and immensely complicated to explain why you should do your own work instead of asking a chatbot to do it for you. That it isn’t obvious to students that they’re cheating when they use chatGPT. That you’re not sure students will comply with simple prohibitions. That you believe students might read a 12,000 word essay. Etc. It might be a good idea to prepare a “tl;dr” for students and tell them that’s what they are required to read, but the long essay is available if they’re interested.

Considering how rampant the AI cheating problem is, if you don’t assume that students are largely lazy or unethical, then all those messages seem to be true, right?
Yes, it’s really hard and immensely complicated to explain why you should do your own work instead of asking a chatbot to do it for you (or else there wouldn’t be widespread AI cheating given 3 years of those explanations).
Yes, it isn’t obvious to students that they’re cheating when they use ChatGPT (and this includes not knowing where the line is between acceptable and unacceptable use).

I’m pretty sure students already know all this, and so to deny it is to deny the obvious. I can’t see how that would help with the credibility of the article.
Which messages are you saying is false or otherwise wrong to send? Or are you rejecting the premise about students not being largely lazy or unethical?
I’ll go with “otherwise wrong to send” on some of these messages. If you convey that the basis for an AI ban is immensely complicated, won’t some students think “this is too hard for me to understand, so I’ll just do what I want” or “this is all very philosophical, and so must be open to debate, so I’ll do what I want”? So….there might be a reduction of compliance from sending the message that these things are very complicated, even if they are.
Then again, part of an AI ban isn’t that complicated, and it seems wise to stress where a policy is based on shared beliefs. “We all know that cheating is wrong, and just submitting a chatbot’s work is obviously cheating.” I think students do know that, and they’re using AI anyway for various reasons. But yeah, where to draw the line is trickier and I agree it’s worth trying to persuade students when it comes to what may seem grey to them. For example: why am I prohibiting using AI to summarize articles? It takes some doing to explain that.
As to length: sad to say, when I assign 40-50 page articles I don’t find students do the readings. Lately I’m also concerned that a long reading is going to make getting an AI to summarize very tempting.
Yes, that could work, too, though I think it suffers from the same problems as you’re claiming about my approach. Further, it doesn’t directly address or start a conversation about the subject of AI cheating, which is an intended bonus for my tech-ethics course.
Imagine you’re trying to “convince [students] that you respect their time and that the material is genuinely worthy of it.” Let’s say you write up a short essay about it or build it into your first lecture.
Your own objection can also be applied to your approach, that: it isn’t going to change students’ behavior because (1) the offenders aren’t going to pay attention to your article or lecture (because they’re already predisposed to not care about your class, e.g., if they’re non-majors and your course fulfills some requirement, and/or they already don’t have qualms about AI cheating), and even if they do pay attention, (2) it doesn’t convince them that your class is going to be a worthy investment of their time (because they’re already predisposed to not care about your class, etc.).
Seems that I can assume those things about your would-be offenders, as you’re assuming about mine, i.e., that they largely can’t be shaken from their views and are determined to blow off the class.
Anyway, I already do the things you suggested, i.e., I assign only readings and assignments worth their time; I effectively communicate why those things are worth their time; and I demonstrate that I’ve put thought and care into how I teach the material. (My student evals are among the highest in our department.)
But this doesn’t always get all students on board with the class, since even the best-designed classes can still have cheaters. Again, some students are determined to not do the work because they don’t care about the class, period; you can’t always save everyone.
So, a layered approach seems advisable to get through to as many students as possible: convince them that your class is important, design the course to be AI-resistant as much as possible, and convince students that AI use while learning is bad idea. I just didn’t talk about the first 2 layers in my article or this DN guest post…
Absolutely! I think the essay is a demonstration of the fact that you are an engaged and prepared professor. I doubt any of my worries apply to you. Indeed, if I was your student, I’d be interested to read the essay just to get a sense of who you are. Even the students who normally skip readings probably give it a try. This goes especially in a tech-ethics class.
My worries are for everyone else considering using your essay. I think many of the things that make you assigning this good and effective would be lost, and that it could create problems.
As for my approach, I don’t doubt that it has its drawbacks. As for it facing my own worries…
There’s a subset of students, especially in the first weeks of the semester, who will attend and pay attention in class but haven’t done the readings. I want these people to know the policy and have a chance to weigh in or ask questions.
That’s true, but talking about class rules and expectations never does. I try to cover only what’s necessary and promptly move on to the interesting stuff. I want them to get a taste of what we’ll cover in the semester so that they’ll know if the class is a good fit for them.
FYI: in January 2026, I will be launching a non-profit auditing organization to track and certify courses where all grades come only from in-person offline on-paper evaluations.
