Teaching Under Hostile Conditions

“The many sources of harm and hostility we collectively face—as philosophers, as educators, and as humans—seem too numerous to name, let alone to seriously contemplate or effectively cope with.”

That’s Alida Liberman, associate professor of philosophy at Southern Methodist University, in the editorial introduction to a special issue of the journal American Association of Philosophy Teachers Studies in Pedagogy.

The subject of the issue is “Teaching in Hostile Contexts.” The entire issue is currently open access, and its articles are grouped into three categories: “Combatting Hostile University Policies and Practices”, “Challenging or Hostile Classroom Environments”, and “Navigating Hostile Professional Environments.” The 15 articles cover a range of subjects.

Check out the whole issue here. Discussion about the topic is welcome.

As someone who’s currently working in a hostile environment, thank you.

I was invited by Alida to write about my previous institution but declined for fear of retaliation.
