Description: The Colorado Summer Seminar in Philosophy is intended for outstanding advanced undergraduates who are considering graduate school in philosophy. The aim is to introduce students to the atmosphere of a graduate-level seminar, giving them a chance to explore their philosophical abilities and interests before they commit to a graduate program. The topic for the 2022 Summer Seminar is “Norms and Values.” Possible subjects include general questions about the nature and authority of epistemic norms, legal norms, aesthetic norms, moral norms, norms of mental health, and norms of scientific inquiry, as well as normative questions about more specific subjects like racial justice, the right to privacy, obligations to future generations, and the ethics of divestment. Class sessions will be supplemented by a variety of extracurricular events, including talks on additional subjects and workshops on such topics as women in philosophy and how to apply to graduate school.

Hertog Foundation Political Studies Program

  • Eligibility: Undergraduates and very recent graduates (2022 or 2023) not already pursuing an advanced degree
  • Location: Washington, DC
  • Duration: 6-week program, June 18–July 29, 2023
  • Stipend: Housing and some meals, plus $2,500 stipend

 
Hertog Fellows study classic texts in political thought and some of the seminal documents of American politics with an outstanding faculty. In addition, students study selected public policy issues with some of those who helped formulate and implement those policies. Early Deadline: February 1, 2023. Final Deadline: March 1, 2023

Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy (HCSPiP)

Description: The Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy (HCSPiP) is designed for twenty excellent undergraduate students looking for a creative, exciting, collegial, and engaging two-week experience studying philosophy with other ambitious students. Three concurrent courses, chosen for their innovative pedagogies, will be offered: 

  • Language, Games and Logic, taught by Prof. James Garrison (Baldwin Wallace University)
  • The Value of Beauty, taught by Prof. Alexandra Grundler (Auburn University)
  • The State of Nature (Ultimate Survival Mode), taught by Prof. Rebeccah Leiby (University of Baltimore)

Participants are given a $750 stipend and a travel reimbursement.

COMPASS at Michigan 2023
A workshop for students considering graduate school in philosophy

Description: COMPASS at Michigan is a workshop for students from a diverse range of backgrounds who are considering applying to graduate school in philosophy. Participants will read in advance 3 papers from a range of subfields (to be determined in part by the interests of the participants). In addition to sessions discussing the papers, there will be one session featuring faculty members giving advice on graduate school and one session featuring a graduate student panel on graduate school applications and graduate student life. There will also be opportunities to attend graduate student research presentations and meet with graduate student mentors. 
COMPASS will pay for the travel and room and board for accepted participants.

Eligibility: Advanced undergraduates as well as MA students who are considering applying for graduate study in philosophy are eligible to apply. Applicants should also meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Be part of a group/demographic underrepresented in academic philosophy;
  • Have demonstrated a sustained commitment to diversity in philosophy

PIKSI-Boston Summer Institute
Eligibility: Undergraduates and very recent graduates (2022 or 2023) not already pursuing an advanced degree
Location: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Duration: 1-week program, July 9–July 17, 2023
Stipend: Housing and meals, plus $500 stipend
Deadline: March 31, 2023

PIKSI summer institutes are designed to encourage undergraduates from groups traditionally underrepresented in philosophy to consider future study in philosophy. While at the PIKSI-Boston institute, Alain Locke Fellows receive mentoring opportunities and spend their full-time studying philosophy with visiting professors and graduate teaching assistants that mirror the demographics of the fellows.

SIPP@Brown

Location: Brown University, Providence, RI
Duration: two-week program, July 10–July 21, 2023
Eligibility: Undergraduates in their junior or senior year, or very recent graduates not already pursuing an advanced degree.
Stipend: Housing and meals, plus $500 stipend.
Deadline: April 15, 2023

Description: SIPP@Brown is a two-week residential program for undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in philosophy and who are members of groups that traditionally have been underrepresented in the field. During the program, participants will attend two daily seminars. They will also participate in regular social and educational activities arranged by the Brown Department of Philosophy and in the SIPP@Brown Conference. Participants can expect to leave the program with a better understanding of what graduate school in philosophy is like and how to prepare applications for both MA and PhD programs.
