The University of Edinburgh hired eight (!) philosophers this year.
Some of them have already begun their appointments at Edinburgh, while others will be joining over the coming months:
- Damian Calouri: Senior Lecturer, ancient philosophy (previously at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas)
- Michael Cholbi: Professor, ethics (currently at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona)
- Jonny Cottrell: Lecturer, early modern philosophy, particularly Hume (previously at Wayne State University)
- Tommy J. Curry: Professor, philosophy of race & gender, black male Studies, Africana philosophy (previously at Texas A & M University) (previous post)
- Michael Gill: Professor, history of ethics, contemporary ethical theory, medical ethics (currently at the University of Arizona)
- Filipa Melo Lopes: Lecturer, social & political philosophy, feminist philosophy
- Shannon Vallor: Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence (currently at Santa Clara University & Google)

With these hires, there will be around 40 philosophers at Edinburgh. The current faculty list is here.

Aren’t they still hiring?
We are in the middle of a search and expect to appoint 5 people (at lecturer/senior lecturer level), with at least two more posts the following year. A couple of these are replacements, but mostly the spate of hiring reflects enrolment growth in recent years and an investment by the university in the subject. We now have close to 800 students studying UG philosophy to degree level (similar to a major/double major), plus grad programs, etc.
Amazing.
Congratulations to Edinburgh for hiring philosophers from all over the world: eastern America, western America, northern America, and even southern America.
Do you mean hiring from, or philosophers from? 7 of the 8 were most recently in the US, but they are from 5 different countries. Overall on faculty we have philosophers from 15 or 16 countries.
My mistake! I’d assumed that they were all American.
