Toronto Raising Funds for Waheed Hussain Memorial Award

The University of Toronto is raising funds to establish an award in memory of philosopher Waheed Hussain, who died from cancer in 2021 at the age of 48.

Hussain, who joined the Toronto faculty in 2014, was known for his work in political philosophy, moral philosophy, economics, and business ethics. His book, Living with the Invisible Hand: Markets, Corporations, and Human Freedom, was posthumously published earlier this year.

“Waheed was special in every way: a superb and beloved teacher; a profoundly original philosopher; and an all-round wonderful human being,” the university says.

The goal of its fundraising, it says, “is to create an endowed award in Waheed’s honour, to support students at the University of Toronto Scarborough and to further extend Waheed’s legacy to future generations.”
