A Big List of Philosophy Podcasts (updated)

How many philosophy podcasts are there?

At least 60
Over 80
Over 100 and they take a variety of forms.

Andrew Lavin (CSU Chico, Butte College, Feather River College), himself the host of the podcast Reductio, compiled a list of them, below:

Dr. Lavin knows that he may have missed some, so podcasters are encouraged to  e-mail him at [email protected] to join the list, and we’ll update it. Feel free, as well, to mention any additions to the list in the comments, including hosts’ names and the kind of podcast it is.

(Revisions will be made to the list on an ongoing basis, typically without a major announcement of an update.)

See also Kelly Truelove’s list of philosophy and ideas podcasts, philosophy podcasters on Twitter and his TrueSciPhi radio (an internet radio station streaming participating philosophy & ideas podcasts).

Feeling quite philosophical here, but what counts as a “podcast”? Do youtube channels count?

Not strictly speaking a philosophy podcast but Sean Carroll’s _Mindscape_ has featured conversations with many philosophers and regularly touch on philosophical questions even with non-philosophers.

I’d like to draw attention to the New Narratives in the History of Philosophy podcast. The podcasts are student driven and the interviews by graduate students with experts on women philosophers in the history of philosophy promote further inquiry. https://www.newnarrativesinphilosophy.net/podcast.html or https://soundcloud.com/user-312950500-596028810. There are another set of episodes currently in the works that will move beyond Europe and the early modern period.

In addition to the excellent New Books in Philosophy, other hosts on the New Books network interview authors about philosophy books. I don’t know how many other hosts on other channels are philosophers, apart from myself, but you can find interviews with philosophers about their work on a range of channels there, including New Books in Language, South Asian Studies, Hindu Studies, Buddhist Studies, East Asian Studies, Intellectual History… and more. Sometimes they’re cross-listed to Philosophy, sometimes not, so it’s worth keeping an eye out. Just use the “search” function: https://newbooksnetwork.com/search?q=philosophy

I know that the list is meant to be for English speakers but it’s worth noting that the most downloaded/listened to philosophy podcast in the world is very probably the podcastable version of the French daily radio show « Les Chemins de la philosophie » which is extremely popular in France including with non academics.

Philosophy Podcasters should join our Facebook group “Philosocasters”, where we’ve got a bit of a network going. Reserved for podcast producers, though.

Another good source of philosophy audio used to be courses on iTunes U.

iTunes U is apparently now dead, along with the searchability it provided. However, some of the courses are still up there (for now?). The search terms that one would assume to use don’t help much. “Oxford philosophy” is probably the most useful search. The course on Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason (Dan Robinson) is still there and is enjoyable.

Anyone know if all that audio went somewhere searchable?

I have about 50 philosophy courses from old downloads. If anyone is interested, I can compile a list and would be happy to dump them in a dropbox somewhere.

Slice of Phi is a podcast contending with the philosophy we find in our daily lives, specifically with pop culture and current events. It tries to highlight to people who aren’t in the field that philosophy is accessible and can be found everywhere.

Wanted to share my own Podcast, launched just two days ago, called Pandemic Ethics. On the podcast I discuss the defining ethical challenges of the Covid-19 Pandemic with experts in philosophy, health, law, economics, public policy, and beyond. On the first episode, Jonathan Wolff and I talk about how ethics can inform public policy (and how it often fails to do so) and what we owe to those who take on additional risk to provide essential services during the pandemic.
