Philosophers Elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Eight philosophers have been elected into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (AAAS) as part of its 2015 class:

The AAAS describes itself as “one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies” and “a leading center for independent policy research.” In order to be a candidate for membership in the AAAS, an existing member has to nominate you. The entire 2015 class is listed here.

Readers may recall the AAAS’s Humanities Departmental Survey, which this past year included a report on philosophy.

Beyond the Ivory Tower. Workshop for academics on writing short pieces for wide audiences on big questions. Taking place October 18th to 19th. Application deadline July 30th. Funding provided.

That’s Hans Kamp, formerly at UT Austin. Also, I think AAAS usually abbreviates American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Congratulations to the inductees! A question: how are these decisions made? Does anyone know more about the criteria?
