Wanted: Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory

Jeremy Waldron is leaving Oxford to return full-time to New York University (via Leiter), opening up Oxford’s famed Chichele Professorship in Social and Political Theory. Before Waldron, the chair was held by G.A. Cohen, Charles Taylor, John Plamenatz, Isaiah Berlin, and G.D.H. Cole. Who will be next?

He was offered the White’s Chair in Moral Philosophy. As far as I know, the search committee for the Chichele Chair has not even been formed yet.

Jonathan Wolff, Philippe Van Parijs, Charles Beitz. Or should we be looking at younger folks?

Thomas Pogge was mentioned last time the position came up (I think he was even approached). Won’t be this time’

I thought that Jonathan Wolff would be offered it last time. In addition to being a really good philosopher, he would have continued the somewhat incestuous history (Taylor, Berlin, Cohen, etc.) and history of working on Marx and/or Hegel. Maybe Waldron broke that chain enough that Wolff won’t be a top candidate.
