Shafer-Landau from Wisconsin to UNC (updated)
Russ Shafer-Landau, currently professor of philosophy and chair of the philosophy department at the University of Wisconsin, has accepted an offer from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Starting this summer, he will be professor of philosophy there and director of UNC’s Parr Center for Ethics. Shafer-Landau is known for his work in metaethics.
UPDATE: Some have asked about about the fate of the Wisconsin Metaethics Workshop, or Mad Meta, as it is known. According to Shafer-Landau, the workshop will certainly be taking place in Chapel Hill starting in 2016. A decision about the location of the 2015 meeting should be made by the end of the month.
What is it with triple-named, brilliant ethicists and North Carolina? Russ Shafer-Landau moves to join Geoffrey Sayre-McCord where he will be neighbors with Walter Sinnot-Armstrong.
Coincidence? I think not.
Don’t forget Ryan Preston-Roedder, Travis!
The situation is even worse than I thought!
I wonder whether this decision by Shafer-Landau had anything to do with the current attack upon the University of Wisconsin System, or if it was made independently of that. Anyone know?
Russ has been clear with both his colleagues and the graduate students here in Wisconsin that any potential financial threats to our university played no role in his decision to move to UNC.
Thanks, Mike.
