Philosophers at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities have been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to further support the work of their Center for Canon Expansion and Change.

The Center for Canon Expansion and Change (CCEC) is an initiative housed in the University of Minnesota Department of Philosophy. Founded in 2021, the CCEC’s programming supports philosophers interested in teaching relatively neglected figures in the history of philosophy, particularly early modern philosophy. Its directors are Dwight K. Lewis and Jessica Gordon-Roth.

The Mellon Foundation grant will, among other things, fund further development of the CCEC’s summer program for teachers of philosophy.

In a press release from the university, Professor Gordon-Roth says, “This funding allows us to expand the way philosophy is taught, bringing newer voices to the forefront and creating a richer understanding of the discipline.”
