A “Nonproblematic” Black Philosopher

Mabogo More, who was recently awarded the Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement award by the Caribbean Philosophical Association, is profiled in the Mail & Guardian. More held appointments at University of the North – Turfloop, the University of KwaZulu-Natal – UKZN, and the University of Durban-Westville, as well as fellowships at Birmingham, University of Illinois, and Harvard. The article contains interesting observations about race and philosophy in South Africa and elsewhere, including the lack of African philosophy in the journals published in South Africa, the fact that others seemed uninterested in discussing philosophy with him, how Stephen Biko could be understood as a philosopher, and how we was able to secure his initial academic post because “I was regarded as a nonproblematic black.”
