The editors of Free & Equal: A Journal of Ethics and Public Affairs, the open-access journal created last year by the former editorial team of Philosophy & Public Affairs, is announcing an essay prize for early career scholars.
The prize, $2000, will be awarded to the best essay published in the journal during 2025 or 2026 by an early career scholar.
The editors write:
Free & Equal: A Journal of Ethics and Public Affairs is pleased to announce a $2000 prize for the best essay published by an early career scholar in legal, moral, or political philosophy published in the journal in the years 2025 and 2026. We define early career scholars as those no more than 10 years from receiving a postgraduate degree. All articles published by authors in this category will be eligible for consideration for the prize, and the awardee will be determined by a committee of Associate Editors for the journal. There is no need to nominate your article: any piece by an early career author that is submitted and accepted by F&E in the relevant years will be considered a candidate for the award. We expect to announce the recipient of the award in early 2027.

Nice. But does it mean the journal has not received as many (good) submissions the editors expected?
Nope! I spoke with one of the Associate Editors yesterday, and they’ve been overwhelmed with the number of submissions. Even more than usual, if I recall correctly.
F&E received 151 submissions in 2024. (We launched September 13, 2024, so this represents 3.5 months of submissions). Many thanks to our community, and we hope that people will continue to submit.
