Colorado Summer Seminar in Philosophy: Methods and Models
Dates: June 7 – June 26, 2026
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Contact: David Boonin – david.boonin@colorado.edu
Deadline: March 13, 2026
Description: Philosophers employ a variety of methods to develop arguments for their conclusions. These include arguments from analogy, inference to the best explanation, reflective equilibrium, conceptual analysis, debunking arguments, transcendental arguments, arguments by reductio ad absurdum, and appeals to the results of introspection. In addition, some areas of philosophy, like game theory, formal epistemology, and philosophy of physics, make special use of theoretical models to help grapple with particularly complex phenomena. The 2026 Summer Seminar will explore a variety of these methods and models as they appear in contemporary and historical works across a wide range of philosophical subfields. Some sessions of the Seminar will focus primarily on questions about a particular method or model. We may spend a day, for example, looking at arguments for and against the use of reflective equilibrium, or of appeals to intuitions about hypothetical cases. Other sessions will largely focus on assessing the merits of a particular argument that makes use of a particular method, but these sessions, too, will include attention to broader questions about the advantages and disadvantages of the method the argument uses. And as an extra bonus this year, the 2026 Summer Seminar will be run in conjunction with the 2026 Formal Epistemology Workshop, which will take place in Boulder June 19-21. During the second week of the Seminar, some faculty from the Workshop will prepare the Seminar students to participate in the Workshop by covering some fundamental background material in formal epistemology. In this way, every student in the Summer Seminar will be able to participate in the Workshop regardless of whether they have had any previous exposure to formal epistemology, and previous familiarity with formal methods in philosophy more generally is in no way a prerequisite for attending the Seminar. If anything, the 2026 Summer Seminar may be a particularly valuable experience for those students with a strong background in philosophy who have not yet had the opportunity to reflect more generally on questions raised by the philosophical techniques they have been using in their classes.

MCMP Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical Philosophy
20th – 24th July 2026
LMU Munich, Bavaria, Germany

Application Deadline 15th March
The Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) is organizing the third edition of the Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical Philosophy, which will take place from the 20th to 24th July 2026 in Munich, Germany. The summer school continues a successful tradition, which began in 2014 with eight editions of the summer school on mathematical philosophy for female students and was expanded in 2024 to underrepresented groups. The 2026 “Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical Philosophy” is open to women and members of other groups that are under-represented in mathematical philosophy. These groups include under-represented gender identities, races and ethnicities, people with disabilities, people from low income and non-academic family backgrounds. The target level is master students and last year-bachelor students. The school’s aim is to encourage students to engage with mathematical and scientific approaches to philosophical problems, and thereby help to redress the under-representation of women and other marginalized groups in mathematical philosophy. It offers the opportunity for study in an informal and interdisciplinary setting, for lively debate, and for the development of a network of students and professors interested in the application of formal methods to philosophy.

This program doesn’t take place in the summer, but it might of interest to the same group of people who are interested in summer programs:
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Michigan is thrilled to announce COMPASS at Michigan 2026. The workshop will bring together students with an interest in pursuing academic philosophy for a weekend of discussion, networking, and mentoring. Advanced undergraduates and M.A. students (first and second year) who are planning to apply to graduate institutions in North America are eligible to apply. All costs (travel, food, lodging) will be paid for by the program.
Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria:
The workshop will take place from October 2nd-4th, with participants arriving in Ann Arbor on the evening of October 1st. Workshop participants will be expected to read in advance 2-3 papers from a range of subfields (depending in part on the interests of accepted participants). In addition to sessions discussing the papers, there will be one session featuring faculty members giving advice on graduate school and one session featuring a graduate student panel on graduate school applications and graduate student life. There will also be opportunities to attend graduate student research presentations and meet with graduate student mentors.
The deadline for applications is May 15th. Applicants will be notified in June/July.
