Philosophy Fortnight: A Celebration of British Philosophy

The British Philosophy Fortnight is a celebration of “all that is positive in the world of UK philosophy—education and learning, research and policy impact, ideas and arguments” and how “philosophy changes lives and improves society.”

Organized chiefly by the British Philosophical Association (BPA), the British Philosophy Fortnight is taking place March 17th through 31st. The plan is that this becomes an annual occurrence.

There are some official launch events as part of the celebration, including one at Parliament and one at the University of London (both on March 20th). There will also be a student competition, newly commissioned videos and school materials for everyone to view and use, and other events.

The organizers have been encouraging university philosophy departments, philosophy clubs, and other philosophy organizations to plan their own events as part of the Philosophy Fortnight and publicize them. Simon Kirchin, director of the BPA, writes:

We have held a range of briefing sessions for people in universities and schools (mainly), but I am aware that some people reading this blog won’t have heard about the campaign until now. If you want to find out any more, please feel free to email me: [email protected].

He also passed on the following information for those interested in participating in or organizing the Philosophy Fortnight’s constituent events:

We are using two hashtags:

    • #PhiloFortnight2025 – for the duration of the fortnight, but we aren’t being strict about timings
    • #PhilosophyMatters – which will be the permanent, all-year-round hashtag through which we can all gather and communicate news, events and everything else in philosophy

Here’s how you can help:

    • If you are organizing anything around March or early April (and beyond!) please use those hashtags on social media. Post and repost across your favoured platform.
    • Visit the BPA website in the next couple of weeks we will be posting various things (including logos to use for any events) and materials for schools
    • Tell us if you are organizing anything—the BPA website has the contact details
    • If you can, get people involved
      • If you are at a university or school – students, alumni, other academics/teachers, senior leaders
      • If you are outside formal education and research – any friends and colleagues

We hope that Philosophy Fortnight will become an annual event, as a platform for sharing all the good things that our community does.  So even if you aren’t organizing anything for this year, please think about doing so in March 2026.
