Christopher Hookway (1949-2024)
Christopher Hookway, emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of Sheffield, died last month.

Professor Hookway was known for his work on pragmatism, Pierce, Quine, and epistemology. His books included Quine (Polity, 2013), The Pragmatic Maxim: Essays on Peirce and Pragmatism (Oxford, 2012), Truth, Rationality, and Pragmatism: Themes from Peirce (Oxford, 2000), and Scepticism (Routledge, 1990), among others. You can learn more about his writings here and here.
Hookway was on the faculty at Sheffield from 1995 until his retirement. Before that, he worked at the University of Birmingham, and held visiting positions at Harvard University (as a Fulbright Scholar) and the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to that, he was a research fellow at Peterhouse College at the University of Cambridge. He earned his PhD from Cambridge, his MA from the University of Oxford, and his BPhil from the University of East Anglia.
Hookway died on October 21st, 2024, ten years after having been diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy, a form of early onset dementia. His wife, Jo, has set up a JustGiving page soliciting donations to support the Dementia Research Fund, which is part of the National Brain Appeal.
A memorial notice is posted at the University of Sheffield site.
Those of us who work on the philosophy and life of C.S. Peirce will be forever in Hookway’s debt, for his insightful and extensive commentaries on Peirce and his use of Peircean ideas in his own philosophy.
