Michael Detlefsen (1948-2019)


Michael (“Mic”) Detlefsen, the McMahon-Hank Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, has died.

Professor Detlefsen was known for his work in the philosophy and history of mathematics and philosophical logic. You can browse some of his writing here.

He attended Wheaton College as an undergraduate and earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. His first professorship was at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, beginning in 1975. He moved to Notre Dame in 1983.

A memorial notice at Notre Dame says Professor Detlefsen is remembered as “a kind and gentle man, a generous colleague, and an inspirational mentor.”
