New: Journal of the Philosophy of Games
The Journal of the Philosophy of Games (JPG) has published its inaugural issue.
JPG is a new peer-reviewed, online, open-access journal hosted by the University of Oslo . It features articles about philosophical issues raised by games and their study, including “the general nature of games and gameplay” and “their interrelation with technology, art, communication and social interaction.” While the journal has a primary focus on digital games, “a portion of the articles will be dedicated to discussions that pertain to games and gaming in general.”
You can learn more about its editorial team here. The first issue is here.
I love that Monument Valley is on the graphic. Such a beautiful game.
Yes, it is visually delightful game that charmingly asks you to overcome perceptual preconceptions to solve its puzzles.
One of the articles in the journal’s inaugural issue is “The Incompatibility of Games and Artworks” by Brock Rough (Maryland). From the abstract:
“This paper argues that something being a game is incompatible with it also being an artwork, and thus insofar as videogames are games, they cannot be artworks. This incompatibility arises out of the different attitudes that are prescribed for engaging with games versus those for engaging with artworks.”
I haven’t read the article yet, but Monument Valley inclines me towards skepticism.
