Fellowships
For over thirty years, the Center has welcomed researchers from around the world to spend time in residence at Notre Dame. In that period, over 250 scholars working in philosophy, theology, religious studies, other humanities fields, and even the social sciences have pursued cutting edge research using the vast resources of this institution. Residential fellows research, write, discuss works-in-progress, participate in exciting media initiatives, and enjoy vibrant community life while at Notre Dame.
AY 2024-2025 Theme: Religion and Democracy
The Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame is offering up to 4 residential fellowships during the 2024 – 2025 academic year for projects on the theme of “Religion and Democracy”. Fellows will pursue independent research while interacting with leading scholars in philosophy and theology during a year in residence at Notre Dame’s Center for Philosophy of Religion.
We are very excited to announce that one additional residential fellowship has been awarded to Kristin Kobes Du Mez, who will be joining us for the 2024-2025 discussions.
This fellowship program is open to both recent Ph.D.'s and established scholars. The Center typically funds scholars in philosophy and theology; but we have occasionally funded researchers in other humanities disciplines, and we are especially open to a broader interdisciplinary community for the 2024 – 2025 academic year. Our weekly works-in-progress group is primarily attended by our visiting fellows and local faculty and graduate students in philosophy, and our priority will be to fund projects on the 2024 – 2025 research theme that can be productively engaged in that context.
Successful applicants who have recently received their Ph.D. will be appointed as postdoctoral fellows, funded at $80,000 plus benefits. Established scholars will need to request leave from their home institutions in order to accept the fellowship; we ask that you verify that the amount of funding required by your home institution for such an arrangement is less than or equal to $80,000 before applying.
For the 2024-2025 academic year we are especially interested in projects that investigate the relationship between religion and democracy; however, proposals that relate indirectly will also be considered.
Adjacent research questions may explore, for example:
- Theistic political philosophy, or relationships between religion and politics
- Ethical and historical issues concerning voting and representation, public discourse and freedom of speech, or the role of social media in religious and political conversation and debate
- Topics at the intersection of the history of religion and politics, philosophy of religion, political philosophy, and feminist philosophy or philosophy of gender
- Cultural attitudes toward religion and democracy
The deadline for initial applications is December 31, 2023 . Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by February 15, 2024. Fellowships begin in August 2024 and conclude in May 2025.
