Mentoring Workshop For Women Graduate Students In Philosophy

Athena in Action is a networking and mentoring workshop for graduate student women in philosophy. Applications are now being accepted for its third annual workshop, which will be taking place this summer.

The workshop’s co-directors are Elisabeth Camp (Rutgers), Elizabeth Harman (Princeton), and Jill North (Rutgers). It

brings together a group of graduate students with a group of women faculty mentors for three days of substantive philosophical discussion and professional advice sessions. Participants benefit from getting to know the other talented graduate students and the faculty members, and from hearing the mentors’ advice on topics of interest to women in the profession.

The upcoming workshop will take place June 26-29, 2018.

Here’s some more about it, from the Athena in Action website:

It will bring together twelve faculty mentors and about 40 graduate students in philosophy, drawn from a range of schools, PhD program stages, and areas of interest. 35 graduate student participants will be chosen from beyond Princeton University, and roughly 5 graduate students will be chosen from Princeton’s students.

The workshop will feature seven paper sessions, with two student commentators each, plus five advice sessions. All paper sessions will be pre-read discussion sessions. Advice sessions will consist of brief comments from some of the mentors followed by a general question-and-answer period. The following topics will be addressed: getting the most out of graduate school; writing a dissertation; publishing; presenting and participating at conferences; preparing for and going on the job market; teaching; starting a tenure-track job; and balancing work with the rest of life…

The workshop will provide meals for all students, and will provide students with shared rooms for three nights at the Nassau Inn in Princeton. The workshop will reimburse up to $400 of each student’s travel costs. Those students who will be traveling to the workshop with a child will be provided with their own rooms in the hotel rather than shared rooms.

The application deadline is December 11,2017. Further details about how to apply are here.
