What Do Philosophers Make?

I mean, besides arguments?

Other possible answers:

  • a virtue of ignorance
  • faculty meetings longer
  • headaches
  • …?

What about when they’re not at work? That’s what the new site Things Philosophers Make is about. (via Samantha Brennan)

I’ve made a table, a bed, and a bookcase. Did you mean qua philosopher? (Ugh, sorry about the ‘qua’.)

Clayton, I gather that the founders mean exactly such things as tables and bookcases, and the captions sort of suggest we make things in ways that affect and are affected by our being philosophers. (To be honest, I frequently make things to get away from the day-to-day job cares, so maybe I made that pie contra philosopher!)

I paint when I get the time. I incorporated my painting hobby into a philosophical blog post and used one of my paintings as an illustration. See: http://mgpiety.org/2012/12/02/hedonic-adaptation/

Interesting post, M.G. Piety! Reminds me of Amy Olberding saying, “There is, between self and stuff, a feedback loop regarding value and identity, as my values and self-understanding inform my choices regarding stuff, and the stuff I select in turn influences and informs value and self-understanding.” If you haven’t read it, you’d like it: http://philpapers.org/rec/OLBLPS

Some of the best jokes.
Story has it that when Quine expressed his gratitude for a birthday gift that Morgenbesser got him, Morgenbesser replied, “Use it. Don’t mention it.”

Tile floors. I guess I’m a foundationalist. Wish I had an easy way to link to my floors here.
