A Philosophy Video Game

The makers of the video game, The Old City, say that it is “philosophically founded,” and this article about the game uses some version of the word “philosophy” about a dozen times. “Think of it like a Lewis and Clark diary to epistemology,” the lead designer says. Still, it is hard to get a grasp of what they are talking about, or whether they know what they are tallking about. Video games are largely outside my area of expertise, but I imagine that there have been some that could be said to take up philosophical ideas (readers?). As for The Old City, it is still in development. Perhaps they are looking to bring on board some philosophers to help them out.

Of the ones I’ve played, Chrono Trigger and its spiritual sequel Chrono Cross ask many questions about free will, philosophical anthropology, friendship, and just war theory. There’s also time travel thrown in for good measure ;-).
