Petition for Philosophers’ Code of Conduct
Philosophers Eleanore Stump and Helen de Cruz have started a petition asking the American Philosophical Association to produce a code of conduct and a statement of professional ethics for professional philosophers.
Fortunately, there was no philosopher’s code of conduct which prevented Socrates from spoiling the youth in Athens 2500 years ago. If there had been such a code, there probably wouldn’t have been any philosophy.
In my opinion, once philosophy is considered a “profession” things can only go wrong.
Maybe there were better philosophers than Socrates, at Socrates’ time, and we don’t know about them because there was no code giving them an equal platform to Socrates.
